DID YOU KNOW THAT ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCES ON THROMBOSIS AND CANCER HAS BEEN HELD IN BERGAMO FOR OVER 20 YEARS?

Categories News, ONCO-HEMATOLOGY

It is called ICTHIC (International Conference on Thrombosis and Hemostasis Issues in Cancer) and it is an international scientific congress that the Artet Foundation helps to organize and, from 2001 to today, it has become a point of reference for the most important world experts on hemostasis and thrombosis in cancer . For professionals it is known as “the Bergamo Conference”, the first completely focused on this topic.

Where does it take place and who does it involve?
Of the eleven editions held so far, ten were held in Bergamo and one in the Piedmontese town of Stresa. Organized every two years, each edition involves several hundred doctors and researchers from all over the world.

How is it organised?
Each edition lasts three days and is made up of plenary sessions, debates, round tables and special readings for a discussion between professionals (and not only) as well as an opportunity to take stock of the situation on the biological mechanisms underlying cancer relationships -thrombosis, on clinical and basic research aspects.

What purpose has it served so far?
Over the last 20 years, awareness has definitely grown in the scientific community and thanks to ICTHIC, doctors and researchers who are experts in the field can come together to discuss opinions and ideas, exchange relevant information and start new collaborations.

It should also be underlined the constant progress in the field of research where the role played in cancer biology by coagulation proteins, inflammatory molecules, platelets, neutrophils and proteolytic enzymes has significantly expanded.

What are the recent advances in cancer and thrombosis research?
Scoring models have been designed or are being evaluated to estimate thrombotic risk in an individual patient with cancer. Clinical trials have been conducted and others are underway to test the efficacy and safety of new antithrombotic strategies and new drugs to prevent and treat thrombosis in cancer patients. Guidelines have been produced to assist clinicians in the management of thrombosis in these patients. Recently, attempts to improve patient awareness of the risk of thrombosis have also intensified.

Because it is important?
Because the development and diffusion of scientific research passes, above all, from moments of open discussion becoming an opportunity in which synergies, ideas and greater awareness arise, in the perspective that research can make new approaches for diagnosis available to medicine early, cancer prevention and help improve the care offered to those who are already ill.

When will the next edition be?
From 17 to 19 May 2024, in Bergamo.
